I started nurse training in September 1994 and qualified in September 1997 as a mental health nurse. There followed a year working on an acute mental health ward, then I moved to a rehabilitation unit for adults recovering from mental health problems and run by Social services, where I worked as a Residential Social Worker for 4 years.
In 2002 I returned to mental health nursing, and I now work in a unit for adults recovering from mental health difficulties. So I count myself fortunate that I have experience of both the social and the medical models of mental health care.
Prior to starting nurse training I worked for five years as an orderly in the main operating theatre of a general hospital.
